ZENONIA 1 Good vs Evil
How dialogue and quests swing Regret toward light or darkness — and which bosses change.
ZENONIA 1 is a story about a boy named Regret and a world that keeps asking whether he will be better than the war that dropped him. The Steam restoration kept the good-and-evil meter as a core identity system, alongside hunger, weight, and the day-night clock. This page is about that meter: when it moves, which bosses swap, and how to play a route on purpose instead of by accident.
If you want room-by-room order, use the walkthrough. If you want fight patterns, use bosses. If you have not left Ayles, finish Getting Started first — you will not lock an ending in the first shop scene.
The video in the middle of this page is a story capture around the Ladon thread, useful as a reminder that the mythic plot is not separate from your moral choices.
What alignment is
Alignment is a hidden lean, not a class. Warrior, Paladin, and Assassin can all finish good or evil. Paladin theming sounds “holy,” but the meter does not auto-fill because you picked a shield. Assassin theming sounds “cruel,” but you can still help NPCs. Class is combat. Alignment is dialogue, quest resolution, and a few keyed story forks.
The original Gamevil script was praised for jokes and for letting you be a menace. The restoration keeps those beats. Steam UI improvements make damage numbers clearer; they do not pop up a modern “Paragon +15” banner after every line. You have to notice the world’s reaction: NPCs change tone, some quests close, and later dungeons load a different guardian.
When the meter moves
Early Ayles chores barely move anything. Help the town, fetch firewood, kill slimes — that is tutorial, not a route. Adonis is where the story starts keeping score. After the Cave of Deceit, a fork around the truth of Regret’s father is the first choice most walkthroughs timestamp. From there, donations versus theft, mercy versus execution, and whether you side with desperate people or step on them all push the lean.
If you want good: help request-givers, pick the less extractive reward, and do not kill named NPCs the game is clearly daring you to kill. If you want evil: take the cruel option when the script offers a knife, and do not undo it with a string of saintly side quests afterward. Mixing randomly produces a muddy middle that still has to pick a lane before Shame.
Sun, the companion tied to the dragon-clan thread, reacts to what you are becoming. Talk to her after major story beats. Companion scenes are not just cutscenes; they are a readout.
Bosses and dungeons that swap
Not every seal changes. Learn the list so you do not panic when a YouTube video shows a different sprite.
- Seal of Deceit: Pale either way. The fork after this dungeon is the story turn, not a different Pale.
- Seal of Despise: Vicious on a good-leaning path, Vague on an evil-leaning path.
- Seal of Greed: Traps, no swapped boss.
- Seal of Betrayal: Ghost of Ladon either way. The meaning of the fight changes with your route more than the name does.
- Seal of Shame: Virulent if you lean good, Lady Charity if you lean evil.
- Canyon of Despair: Ending and last confrontations follow the meter.
If your Despise guardian does not match a guide, you are not in the wrong cave. You are on the other route. The walkthrough names both. The bosses page splits patterns.
Endings
There is a good ending and an evil ending, plus the sense that Regret’s identity — the child of a battlefield — is the point either way. Do not expect a third secret alignment class. Do expect the last hour to play the route you fed. Watching a full evil-route capture before you finish a good save will spoil the last canyon. The review talks about which route is worth a first play; this page only tells you how to steer.
Practical advice for a first Steam save
Play the first save toward good unless you already know you want the knife. Good-route guardians are the ones most English guides name (Vicious, Virulent), so mid-fight help is easier to find. Use quick save before Adonis story scenes. Quick save is a PC addition described in PC changes; it lets you reread a fork without a full town run.
Do not use alignment as an excuse to skip food. Hungry evil Assassin still dies in Greed traps. Keep hunger and weight in the same mental stack as morality.
Second save: pick the other route and a different class from the tier list. The campaign is short enough that a second pass is the intended way to see Lady Charity and Vague.
What alignment is not
It is not multiplayer reputation. It is not a guild rank. It is not a paid season pass. ZENONIA 1 is a single-player restoration of a 2008 script. Steam achievements may track some choices — the store lists achievements — but you should play the meter for the story, then let the achievement overlay catch up.
When you are ready to walk the seals in order, return to the walkthrough. When you need a map of which region holds which seal, open locations.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for new and returning adventurers.
Does class change alignment in ZENONIA 1?
No. Warrior, Paladin, and Assassin are combat roles. Good and evil come from choices. See the tier list for classes.
Which bosses change with good or evil?
Despise (Vicious or Vague) and Shame (Virulent or Lady Charity). Pale and the Ghost of Ladon stay named. Details on bosses.
Can I switch routes mid-game?
You can push the other way with later choices, but late seals already assume a lean. Quick save before the Cave of Deceit fork.
Should I play good or evil first?
Good first is easier to follow in English guides. Evil is a clean second save after the walkthrough.
