ZENONIA 1 Dev Team Interview

Why the 2008 adventure returned, what the demo changed, and what the team will not modernize.

Dev Team Interview

Two interviews in August 2026 explain the Steam restoration better than a feature list. Steam News published ZENONIA 1 Dev Team Interview #01 in late August. Earlier in the month, a Com2us Holdings project manager who uses the Discord name “Regret” spoke with Netto’s Game Room. This page turns those answers into a player-facing brief. Dates stay on Steam launch. The mechanical list stays on PC changes.

The video in the middle of this page is 2026 Steam PC footage of the restored build — Korean title 제노니아1 : 기억의 실타래 — useful as a look at the HUD the interviews describe. It is not a Switch capture.

Why they brought the first adventure back

ZENONIA launched in Korea in 2008 and reached the West in 2009. Playing the original on modern phones became painful. Fans kept asking. 2026 is the original’s 18th anniversary. The team said they did not start from a desire to invent a brand-new ZENONIA; they wanted that palm-sized adventure to meet today’s screens without throwing the identity away.

Identity, in their words: story and characters, class and growth, equipment and skills, good and evil, hunger and weight, day and night. If a rumor says those systems were deleted to chase a 2026 action-RPG template, the interviews contradict it. Play food as real in hunger and weight. Play morality as real in alignment. Play three classes as the whole list on the tier list.

Restoration, not a reboot

The hardest work, they said, was moving a feature-phone game onto monitors and controllers without killing the feel. Resolution, layout, input, even movement timing change how a dash reads. Veterans remember afterimages. New players need readable quest text. Both audiences showed up in the June 2026 Steam Next Fest demo.

Veterans asked for the original-style dash: tap a direction twice, see the afterimage. The full Steam version puts that back. New players asked for UI readability, control guidance, quest guidance, equipment comparison, and combat information. The team said those convenience features were improved because of that feedback, not because a producer decided the original was embarrassing.

What they added around the identity: keyboard, mouse, and full controller support; damage numbers and hit effects; targeting displays; quick save; equipment comparison; batch repair; shop controls; audio sliders; Steam achievements; more languages; balance and stability work. What they did not add: a fourth class, an online campaign, a stated respec machine, or a sequel remaster announcement.

Side quests and experimentation

Asked whether side quests were trimmed for modern attention spans, the project manager said volume and structure stay faithful to the original. Guidance and readability got better so a hunt quota is easier to follow. Optional still means optional. The side quests page is the player map for Libra Oasis, Leo-style errands, and Ayles chores. The walkthrough remains the seal spine.

Builds stay experimental. The team improved comparison UI so you can see what a sword actually does; they did not publish a single recommended tree. Use class compare and stat builds as wiki tools, not as an official meta.

Switch, sequels, and the favorite character

Priorities named in August 2026: Steam on August 31, and a Nintendo Switch version in development. No other platforms confirmed. No specific plan announced for remastering ZENONIA 2 or later numbered games. Reception of this first restoration will be a reference if sequels ever return. Do not write “ZENONIA 2 confirmed” in a group chat from that sentence.

The project manager’s favorite character is Regret — not because he starts as a finished hero, but because he has to choose light or darkness while answering who he is. That is the same pitch as the alignment page, said in the developer’s own voice.

How to use this after launch

The interviews close with a promise to keep listening. That is a reason to watch Steam news after August 31, 2026, not a reason to invent patch notes today. When a balance change lands, check bosses and PC changes. Until then, the restoration’s own words are the filter: keep the original fun, cut the friction that sat between you and it.
